The full ballet of Swan Lake encompasses four acts. The first act introduces the audience to the romantic story of the nobleman, Prince Siegfried, and the Swan Princess Odette. The action begins at a festive gathering in the palace garden where the prince is expected to choose a bride.

When he refuses to do so, he is told by his mother the Queen that he must marry or lose his inheritance. To escape from this obligation, Prince Siegfried decides to go hunting with his friends.

They travel through a dark forest and come across an enchanted lake where swans are swimming gracefully in the moonlight. One of these swans turns out to be Odette, who explains that she has been cursed by an evil sorcerer, Rothbart, and can only regain her human form at nightfall.

The second act takes place at Rothbart’s castle where Prince Siegfried has followed Odette in order to save her from her captor’s spell. With help from his friends, Siegfried manages to break the spell and free Odette from her captivity.

After their return to the palace in Act Three, Prince Siegfried declares his love for Odette and promises to marry her. However, Rothbart appears and reveals that if Siegfried does not marry one of his daughters instead of Odette then she will remain a swan forever.

In Act Four we see a wedding ceremony taking place in which Prince Siegfried appears but does not speak as he is unable to break his promise of marriage with Odette despite pressure from Rothbart and his family. In despair, Prince Siegfried leaps into the lake with Odette following suit soon after him. Both are brought back up by swans revealing that they have been transformed into swans forevermore due to their undying love for each other.
