The Hunter Museum of American Art is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the art of America. Located in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the museum offers an extensive collection of works from the 18th century to the present day.
The museum also offers educational programming and outreach to the community, including lectures, workshops and classes. Visitors can explore the museum’s galleries, featuring more than 5,000 works of art from over 200 years of American history.
The Hunter Museum of American Art has been a part of Chattanooga for over 80 years. Founded by George Hunter and his wife Frances in 1930, the museum is housed in two buildings: a neo-classical mansion originally built in 1905 and a modern glass-and-steel structure completed in 2005. The mission of the Hunter Museum is to promote understanding and appreciation for American art through exhibitions, collections, education programs and public outreach.
The museum’s permanent collection includes 19th century landscape paintings by Frederic Edwin Church and Albert Bierstadt; 20th century works by Georgia O’Keeffe and Jackson Pollock; contemporary pieces by Elizabeth Catlett and Robert Rauschenberg; photography by Ansel Adams; decorative arts such as furniture and textiles; sculpture; prints; drawings; folk art; contemporary craft objects; and more. The Hunter Museum also hosts special exhibitions throughout the year featuring important works from its permanent collection as well as loans from other institutions.
Admission to the Hunter Museum of American Art is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors (65+) and military personnel with valid ID cards, $5 for students with valid student ID cards, $4 for children ages 3–17, free for children under 3 years old.
