First Position. The first position is the most basic of all the positions in ballet. It is where the dancer stands with their feet together, toes pointing forward, and arms held out in a line with the palms facing down. This position forms a “V” shape which is used throughout ballet as the starting point for many steps.

Second Position. The second position is slightly more advanced than the first position, but still easy to learn. Starting from first position, the dancer takes one step forward with one foot while keeping their body aligned in a straight line. The arms remain out in front and palms facing down like in first position.

Third Position. From second position, the dancer takes a step back with one foot so that their feet are wider apart than they were in first or second positions. The arms remain outstretched in front with palms facing down and body aligned in a straight line from head to toe.

Fourth Position. Fourth position builds upon third as it requires both feet to be placed wider apart than third or second positions. The arms remain stretched out like in third or second positions but this time they are raised above shoulder level with palms facing inward towards each other like you’re holding onto something invisible.

Fifth Position. Fifth position is similar to fourth except that instead of having your arms above shoulder level they should be lowered slightly below shoulder level with your palms still facing inward towards each other like you’re holding something invisible between them. The feet should be wider apart than fourth and third positions as well as being turned outward slightly so they form an “X” shape on the floor when viewed from above.

Ballet technique can take years to master but having a strong foundation of these five poses will help any dancer move ahead faster then without them!
