What Are the Three Schools of Ballet?

Ballet

Ballet is one of the oldest, most respected and most beloved forms of dance. It has a long and distinguished history that dates back centuries and has been embraced by cultures around the world.

While there are many different styles of ballet, there are three main schools of thought when it comes to the art form: the French school, the Italian school and the Russian school. Each school is unique in its own way and has its own set of techniques, aesthetics and philosophies.

The French School

The French School of Ballet dates back to 1661 when King Louis XIV created the Academie Royale de Danse. This was followed by the establishment of the Paris Opera Ballet in 1669, which is considered one of the oldest ballet companies in continuous operation today.

The French School is known for its emphasis on grace, elegance and precision. Its steps are often slow, graceful moves which are carefully executed with an emphasis on control and lightness.

The Italian School

The Italian School was first established during the 17th century by Carlo Blasis who wrote “Treatise on the Art of Dancing” – one of the first books on ballet technique. The Italian School emphasizes theatricality and showmanship with dynamic leaps, turns, jumps and larger-than-life movements. It places a greater emphasis on expression than other schools do.

The Russian School

The Russian School was developed in St Petersburg during the 19th century with Marius Petipa as its key figurehead. This school focuses on strength and athleticism which has seen it become one of the most popular styles today with many companies performing works from its repertoire.

Movements are often highly technical, fast-paced and intricate.

Conclusion:

These three schools – The French School, The Italian School and The Russian Schools – make up what we consider to be classic ballet today. Each school has its own unique set of techniques, aesthetics and philosophies which have been passed down from generation to generation making ballet one of the most beautiful art forms around today.
