Founded in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1963, the company has toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe, as well as performing at prestigious festivals such as the Edinburgh International Festival and the American Ballet Theatre’s Fall Gala.

Ballet West was founded by two visionary dancers, Willam Christensen and Bruce Marks. Christensen had trained with some of the foremost choreographers of his time, including George Balanchine, Antony Tudor and Lew Christensen.

He was also a master teacher and coach who helped nurture many of today’s leading ballet stars. Marks was a renowned dancer who trained with some of the most influential figures in dance history including Agnes de Mille, Frederick Ashton and Jerome Robbins. Together they formed Ballet West to bring their vision of beautiful classical ballet to life.

Ballet West is renowned for its classical repertoire which includes works from such masters as Marius Petipa, Lev Ivanov and Fyodor Lopukhov. The company also performs new works from today’s leading choreographers such as Christopher Wheeldon, William Forsythe and Paul Taylor. In addition to traditional ballets such as Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, Ballet West also stages full-length contemporary ballets like Cinderella by Septime Webre (2008) and The Great Gatsby by Stephen Mills (2012).
