What Grade in Ballet Do You Get Pointe Shoes?

When it comes to the world of ballet, the iconic pointe shoes are a sign of a dancer’s progression and skill level. Many aspiring ballerinas dream of the day they can don a pair of these shoes, but what grade in ballet do you need to get pointe shoes?

Generally speaking, dancers must be at least 8-10 years old and have at least two to three years of prior ballet training before they can even attempt pointe work. Additionally, dancers must demonstrate strength, control, balance, and technique appropriate for their age and level. Most importantly, a dancer’s instructor must be confident that they are mentally and physically ready to attempt pointe work.

Beginning Pointe Work

At the pre-pointe level (usually Grade 2 or 3) dancers learn essential exercises that help build strength in the feet and ankles. These exercises are typically done on demi-pointe (half-toe) before progressing to full pointe work. Other exercises focus on strengthening the core muscles which are necessary for proper alignment and balance when en pointe.

Progressing Through Pointe Levels

Grade 4: Once a dancer has mastered pre-pointe exercises they may accept their first pair of pointe shoes. At this stage most students will wear soft block or demi-pointes which are designed to give more support than traditional hard block shoes.
