Holmes was arrested shortly after the attack and charged with 24 counts of first-degree murder, 116 counts of attempted murder, one count of possessing explosives, and one sentence enhancer for a crime of violence.

He pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, but was found guilty on all counts.

In August 2015, Holmes was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole plus 3,318 years for his role in the shooting. He will spend his life in solitary confinement at Colorado State Penitentiary with no contact with other inmates or visitors other than his lawyers and psychiatrists.

Since his sentencing, Holmes has been largely out of the public eye. In 2019, he filed an appeal to have his conviction overturned but it was denied by the Colorado Supreme Court. He remains incarcerated at Colorado State Penitentiary and is expected to remain there for the rest of his life.
