The first art museum in the United States was the National Academy of Design, which was founded in New York City in 1825. It was created to promote and display the work of American artists and to serve as a center for artistic education. The museum featured an extensive collection of American art from the colonial era through the mid-19th century, and it also hosted a number of important exhibitions and educational programs.

The National Academy of Design was followed by other museums dedicated to art in various cities across the United States. The first public art museum was the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, established in Philadelphia in 1876.

This museum featured a collection of American paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings from the colonial period through the late 19th century. It also hosted numerous exhibitions that showcased pieces from different eras and cultures.

In 1896, The Corcoran Gallery of Art opened its doors in Washington D.C., becoming one of the first privately funded art museums in America. This museum focused on showing American artists’ works but also included European and Asian collections as well as modernist works from around the world. In addition to its permanent collection, it hosted regular exhibitions that highlighted both contemporary and historic works from different countries.

The most influential early art museum however, is arguably The Metropolitan Museum of Art (or The Met) which opened its doors in New York City in 1870 with a mission to “collect, preserve, study, exhibit and stimulate appreciation for and advance knowledge of works of art” from all over the world. Today The Met is one of the largest and most visited museums in America with an extensive permanent collection that includes pieces ranging from ancient Egyptian artifacts to modernist works from around the globe.

Conclusion: In conclusion, it is clear that The National Academy of Design holds a significant place in history as being America’s first art museum when it opened its doors in New York City back 1825. Since then numerous other museums have been founded across America each featuring their own collections ranging from European & Asian pieces to modernist works from around the world but none can be said to be quite as influential as The Metropolitan Museum Of Art which has become one of America’s most visited museums.
