Gold Spandau Ballet is a British new wave pop band formed in London in 1979. The band originally consisted of five members: Tony Hadley, John Keeble, Steve Norman, Gary Kemp and Martin Kemp. Their music combined synthpop and soul with elements of jazz-funk, art rock and post-punk.
The band achieved mainstream success in the early 1980s with the release of their hit single “True”, which was featured on their breakout album True. The song peaked at number four on the UK Singles Chart and also charted in the United States, Canada and Australia. The album spawned additional hits such as “Gold” and “Only When You Leave”.
In 1983, Gold Spandau Ballet released their second studio album Parade. The album included the band’s biggest hit to date, “Through the Barricades”, which reached number six on the UK Singles Chart and number two in Australia. Other singles from Parade include “Fight for Ourselves”, “I’ll Fly for You” and “Highly Strung”.
The band continued to release albums throughout the 1980s but failed to achieve the same level of commercial success as they had with True and Parade. In 1986, they released their fifth studio album Through the Barricades which became their most successful album since True, reaching number one on the UK Albums Chart. This was followed by Heart Like a Sky in 1989 which peaked at number four on both the UK Albums Chart and US Billboard 200 chart.
Gold Spandau Ballet split up in 1990 but reformed in 2009 for a reunion tour that included performances at several major music festivals across Europe such as Glastonbury Festival. In 2016 they released their tenth studio album Soul Boys of The Western World which was supported by a world tour that same year.
Gold Spandau Ballet has been an influential British pop group for over four decades now with a successful career that has seen them release ten studio albums as well as numerous singles that have made an impact all over the world.
