Every year around the holiday season, the New York City Ballet (NYCB) puts on its beloved production of The Nutcracker. The NYCB has been performing The Nutcracker since 1954, and it has become a holiday tradition for many New Yorkers. This year, however, due to the pandemic, the NYCB has been forced to make some changes to their production of The Nutcracker.
Instead of having live performances at their home theater of Lincoln Center, the NYCB is offering a virtual version of The Nutcracker that can be enjoyed from anywhere in the world. This virtual version is an interactive experience where viewers can customize their own viewing experience by choosing from different camera angles and other viewing options. In addition, the virtual show features an exclusive score by composer John Adams and an original video design by Finn Ross.
The interactive performance will be available for streaming from December 11th – January 3rd exclusively on nycballet.com/streaming/nutcracker. Each show will start with a pre-recorded introduction from choreographer and NYCB Artistic Director Peter Martins and a special video message about why this year’s presentation of The Nutcracker is so special.
The NYCB has also created a unique “Nutcracker Shop” on nycballet.com/shop where viewers can purchase items related to their streaming production of The Nutcracker as well as other NYCB merchandise such as clothing, books, music and more. Viewers can also make donations to support the NYCB’s mission during this challenging time in order to help them continue producing world-class ballet performances in New York City.
