The Magnolia Home Theater was founded by Richard Schulze in 1966. Schulze had a passion for audio systems and began to research and develop the audio components that would become the foundation of what would eventually become the Magnolia Home Theater.

In 1970, Schulze opened his first store in St. Paul, Minnesota under the name “Sound of Music”, which sold and installed car stereos and home audio systems. He later changed the name to “Magnolia” as he wanted to reflect on the beauty of his products.

In 1973, Schulze opened his first Magnolia Home Theater store in Seattle, Washington. His vision was to deliver superior quality audio systems without compromising on customer service.

He focused on providing an exceptional shopping experience that included knowledgeable staff and excellent customer service. In addition, he also implemented a competitive pricing strategy that allowed customers to get the best deals on their purchases.

By 1979, Schulze had grown his business to include five stores across the United States and Canada; each store specialized in home theater equipment such as speakers, amplifiers, receivers, turntables and more. By 1982, there were 17 stores nationwide as well as an online presence.

Magnolia Home Theater has since grown into a multi-billion-dollar company with over 200 stores worldwide; it is now a subsidiary of Best Buy Co., Inc., which acquired it in 2006 for $2 billion dollars.
