Who Owns Royal Ballet?

Ballet

The Royal Ballet is one of the greatest ballet companies in the world. Founded in 1931, it is based at its own theater, the Royal Opera House, in London’s Covent Garden district. With a long history of excellence, the Royal Ballet has become one of the most sought-after destinations for ballet dancers and enthusiasts alike.

The Royal Ballet is part of the Royal Opera House which is owned by a charity called The Royal Opera House Trust. This trust was established in 1976 and is chaired by Her Majesty The Queen with HRH The Duke of Kent as Vice Chairman. The trust has two trustees from HM Government – the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and a representative from England’s Department for Education.

The day-to-day running of the Royal Ballet is managed by Kevin O’Hare who took over as Director in 2012. He is supported by an Executive Committee which includes seven members – four representatives from HM Government (including ministers), two independent trustees and one appointed by Her Majesty The Queen.

The company itself comprises around 80 dancers who are supported by a staff of over 500 people including costume makers, stage hands, lighting technicians and other backstage personnel. These people are employed by the Royal Opera House Trust on behalf of The Queen.

The company also receives financial support from other sources such as sponsorships and donations from private individuals and companies as well as grants from public funds like Arts Council England.

Conclusion: Ultimately, while many different entities play a role in supporting the Royal Ballet, it ultimately belongs to Her Majesty The Queen and is managed on her behalf through the Royal Opera House Trust.
